Wisconsin's Comprehensive
School Counseling Model
Over the past 20 years school counseling has undergone some radical changes. School counselors are not just the people who tell students to go to college or to technical school or to the military. School counselors at all levels are extremely important players in the education of your children. Each level of counseling has different areas of focus, tasks and challenges.
Elementary counselors teach children about what their role is as a learner, middle school counselors help students realize their true academic and personal potential and high school counselors ready students for transition into the post-secondary world. All levels of counselors also help students with the day-to-day issues that become barriers to achieving a good education. Peer to peer interactions, difficult home situations, drug abuse, socio-economic status and many other societal issues make learning difficult for many of our students.
Below are links to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction's page on Standard 'e', the Model Academic Standards for Counseling, the new Wisconsin Comprehensive School Counseling Model and ASCA (American School Counselor Association) Performance Standards for Counseling Programs. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the new role of the counselor in your child's school.
